When the surf cooks, the kooks surf

17 August 2015 - 02:01 By Roxy Davis

Cape Town has seen its surf population explode, and there are many newcomers in the lineup. With this comes a new surf hazard. the kook.We all know "that guy", the one flailing around the mid-break perfectly positioned to get in the way, the one who refuses to receive even basic instruction because he thinks, "Hey, how hard can this be?"He has not even begun to understand surf etiquette and is messing with other people's enjoyment. Here are some basics to remember next time you paddle out:Honour the lineup's pecking order. On occasion a wave may fall in your lap, but there is a rotation at the main peak so check your place in the queue.Don't ditch your board - always wear a leash.Check the right of way. The surfer closest to the peak gets priority. One person per wave direction. If someone is riding the wave towards you, don't paddle for it and don't drop in.Own your mistakes. If you made one, apologise and don't do it again.Be decisive. Hesitation is the cause of most mistakes. Be deliberate in your actions and those more experienced will read and respond quickly. When paddling into the lineup, don't paddle through the main peak. Use the channel and stay away from the surfer riding the wave. Hopefully, you can start your weekend early as Muizenberg will be firing all day today with 3ft glassy sets peeling through. The offshore continues through tomorrow, which should be great for another classic Muizenberg session. Sunday brings a switch in wind direction as the southerly arrives, so you will find a wave on the Atlantic coastline...
