Your homes are a mess - premier

04 September 2015 - 02:09 By Kingdom Mabuza

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says his government will not solve the housing shortage unless it changes the way in which it builds houses. Makhura, speaking to residents of Evaton, in the Vaal Triangle, yesterday, said building houses haphazardly resulted in many homeless people having to wait for long periods before they were allocated a home."If we build houses the way we have been doing, we will never solve your problem," he said."We are starting to look at mega human settlements, which we will work on in two years to build 25000 houses. By the time we finish, we will house many people. Building many houses at once will be a big intervention."Makhura said the strategy would be implemented throughout Gauteng. He urged people on housing waiting lists to be willing to relocate to areas where the government was building houses. The new approach would entail the government developing economic opportunities for home owners."W e will make sure that we do not build in the middle of nowhere . We will build houses where there are economic opportunities."He promised residents that his government would take steps to put back on track the construction project started years ago as part of the Evaton renewal project."We will be back here to report about what will be done. What we see here is a mess: there are incomplete houses and incomplete roads, and I am not proud. We must complete those projects."ANC councillors must work for all community members, even those who did not vote for the ANC. Everyone who qualifies must be able to get services. The ANC must work for everybody."..
