Kaizer Chiefs have to win this final, says Komphela

At halftime, and 2-0 down to Maritzburg United, in Steve Komphela's first match as Kaizer Chiefs coach, the club's fans must have thought there was no chance of successfully defending the MTN8 title they won last season with Stuart Baxter. Chiefs recovered to win 5-3 and are on course to defend the title, with Ajax Cape Town their opponents in the final at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. It's Komphela's first final since the 2004 Absa Cup, when his Manning Rangers side were given a 3-1 hiding by Moroka Swallows.Komphela was an underdog in that final, but it's different at Chiefs. He is a favourite and knows that a defeat will not go down well with the Amakhosi supporters, who demand success."It's different. Rangers were fighting relegation," Komphela said yesterday."With Chiefs you accept the job and go to a final and you have to win it. This is a team that knows how to win trophies. I hope we continue in the same manner."Yesterday Komphela looked calm and, as usual, gave all his players a firm handshake as they laughed and talked before training got under way. There are, seemingly, hardly any nerves ahead of the final and that should be no surprise when you consider how many titles the players have won."The players are enjoying the moment. The environment has been relaxed," Komphela said."We should be reasonably confident without being arrogant and we should be humble without being too timid."Komphela described his counterpart for Saturday's clash, Roger de Sa, as "smart", and expects a tough match against Ajax."Roger is no small coach. It's not by accident Ajax are on top of the log. It's going to be very interesting."Defender Eric Mathoho was training on Tuesday after missing the Supersport United league match on Saturday with a shoulder injury and could return for the final.Midfielder Willard Katsande will probably also be back after being rested in the fear he could get a yellow card and miss the final.Kaizer Chiefs vs Ajax Cape Town airs from 2pm on Supersport 4...
