Bra Hugh plays for laughs

Music legend Hugh Masekela will team up with comedian Kagiso Lediga to bring television viewers a satirical show with a difference. Lediga will be the host of The Bantu Hour and Masekela will be the co-host and leader of the band.Based on a similar formula to that of Saturday Night Live, the variety show will also feature stand-up comedians such as Celeste Ntuli, Trevor Gumbi and Chris Forest.Members of the creative team that produced Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola are behind The Bantu Hour. The show will feature a celebrity guest and a stand-up comedian before closing with a musical performance.Lediga said: "Working with Bra Hugh was a dream come true for me. I have learnt so much from him and it is indeed an honour."The formula might not be new but the combination of Lediga and Masekela is unusual. And, given the constant pleas for "happy" news and "good" stories, there is little doubt that the show will be a success.Masekela said: "The Bantu Hour is outside the South African TV box."I think everyone needs a real laugh, not a sitcom laugh. On this show it's real laughs," the trumpeter said. When Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola - a show that was twice nominated for an International Emmy Award, in 2013 and 2014 - was canned in September because of "creative disagreements", its fans were stranded. At the time, Gola hinted that his team was working on a new satirical show on a different platform. The Bantu Hour could well be the show that was envisioned, especially as it shares some of the same producers as Late Nite News. The executive producers include Masekela, Themba Vilakazi, Lediga, John Volmink, Isaac Mogajane, Luke Henkeman and Nomsa Daniels. The Bantu Hour airs on SABC2 at 9pm on November 7...
