Visa rules ground Idris

He played Nelson Mandela in the movie but there was no special treatment for Idris Elba. The British actor was scheduled to spend time in South Africa to promote his forthcoming documentary, Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad and Me, with his daughter but the two didn't make it beyond the lounge at London's Heathrow airport, where he was told that the child did not have the paperwork necessary for her to be allowed entry to South Africa.Visa regulations that came into effect earlier this year initially required anyone travelling with a child, either from or to South Africa, to be in possession of the child's unabridged birth certificate. The regulation was intended to curb kidnapping and trafficking but is said to have had a disastrous effect on tourism and has been amended.Anthea Petersen, regional director for A+E Networks, a US media-content company, said: "Idris was travelling with his daughter from Heathrow and only at the last minute did it come to light that she did not have the correct paperwork to enter South Africa."The trip had to be cancelled. We apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment."Following his role in the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Elba was inspired to join forces with South African and UK artists to create the album mi Mandela, a tribute to both his father, who died shortly before he began the project, and to Mandela. It also features South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai.Whereas some fans were disappointed that Elba had to cancel his trip, others criticised him for not familiarising himself with the visa regulations...
