Three hijackers shot dead at Glebelands Hostel

Three men were killed in a shootout with police as they fled into Durban’s notorious Glebelands Hostel precinct in a hijacked Mercedes-Benz. Police said the three – all aged between 20 and 25 – had hijacked the vehicle in Merebank‚ south of Durban‚ as the driver was reversing out of the property.The SAPS’ Provincial Vehicle Task Team and the Durban South K9 Unit responded to the incident.Posted by Phoenix Crime Watch on Wednesday, June 1, 2016“They spotted the vehicle [and] a high-speed chase ensued‚” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela.“The suspects lost control of the vehicle and it overturned as they attempted to enter the Glebelands Hostel. They managed to escape the vehicle and opened fire at police in an attempt to escape.”Police returned fire‚ Magululela said‚ and all three men were fatally wounded. They died on the scene. Their three firearms were recovered and are being sent for ballistics testing to check if they were used in any other crimes.Acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bhekinkosi Langa applauded the officers.“We are relieved that none of our members were killed by these criminals. This incident once again highlights the dangers faced by our police officers when dealing with criminals.
