Police red-faced as lawyers pull out over non-payment

Police management - fighting for the dismissal of a top policeman allegedly involved in illegal renditions - were left red-faced after their lawyers withdrew from a bargaining council procedure because they had not been paid. Adding to the police's woes was that their two witnesses, both senior police officers, failed to arrive at the hearing of Major-General Shadrack Sibiya, because they had no transport. The state attorney, advocate William Mokhari, who has taken over from the police's original lawyers, also failed to arrive at the Safety and Security Bargaining Council hearing yesterday. The council was approached by Sibiya, who is fighting to get back his job as Gauteng Hawks boss after he was allegedly unfairly dismissed for his alleged role in the rendition of five Zimbabwean political dissidents. At least two of those taken back were later killed by Zimbabwean authorities.Phetheni Nkuna of Hogan Lovells attorneys yesterday told the hearing they were withdrawing because they had not been paid since starting with the matter in June 2015.Mokhari said the matter had to be resolved."Once the police have sorted out their problems I can assist."Sibiya's lawyer, Paul Kennedy, said: "The police are playing games. Their lack of seriousness is troubling."..
