Residents of Rabie Ridge in Midrand are concerned about what a Johannesburg councillor is calling "a carefully orchestrated attempt of land invasion".

Nicole Rahn‚ a Democratic Alliance councillor‚ said people began arriving on Saturday evening and by 4pm on Sunday‚ "a considerable number of people" had staked their claim on two main sections of land on either side of Modderfontein Road.

The invasion on Modderfontein Road went all the way down Dane Road to Collie Close and Mayibuye on the one side‚ and on the other side down Rietduiker Road to Strandloper Road and up to the Kanana informal settlement‚ she said.

When she visited the area‚ "Angry residents from Rabie Ridge confronted me saying that this move was unfair as they were in possession of C-Forms and had been on the housing waiting list for years. The feeling was that they would not sit by and watch others 'steal their land by force'."

She alerted the authorities‚ but this may have given rise to another problem.

A local newspaper‚ the Tembisan‚ reported overnight that the community had begun protesting against an attempt by the Red Ants and JMPD officers to remove people from open land.

Roads were blocked off with burning tyres between Rabie Ridge and Mayibuye along Modderfontein Road by community members‚ the Tembisan.co.za reported.
