An American has fallen in love with SA and is turning to the internet for tips on how to find a South African wife.

“I have just returned from the Western Cape and decided that I want to marry a South African and make the Western Cape my second home,” user snoopcat44 wrote in a thread started on Wednesday on the online messaging forum Reddit.

“I understand that I need to return one day which will probably be at the start of next summer around November so I have until then to prepare. Any tips for an American looking for his South African princess?"

User Yellowcardrocks took a considered view in his reply while the rest were largely tongue-in-cheek:

“Well, most South Africans have positive views of Americans so it will not be too difficult. You will however attract many girls who will look to get things from you so you need to be wary of that,” Yellowcardrocks wrote.

“"This is what I can say though, this is what I find IMO (in my opinion), things are quite racialised in SA in the vast majority of cases as far as dating goes. If you are white American or Hispanic, you will have a good chance among girls of all races … If you are black or Asian, you will do very well among colored and black girls and many Indian girls will be interested once you get to know them.”

Psiodrake said: “I’m South African and I can’t find a wife so no.”

The_Angry_Economist reckoned it was all about splashing the cash on fashion: “Buy her a lerra (leather) jacket at the warrafront (Waterfront).”

Paradigm240: “ ’n Jacket virrie merrem, sodat sy kan ophou kerrem (A Jacket for the madam so that she can stop moaning).”

When asked if he had enough money, snoopcat44 said: “Not anymore. I blew it all on sparkling litchi water :(”

Fellow American Skinwalker_WA, who fell in love with SA, suggested learning a local language to break the ice.

“I’m currently learning Afrikaans to help my chances, haha. That and I also just really enjoy the language. I can’t say enough about the great people and places I met and went to in SA; baie goed.”

He added: “If the humour doesn’t work I’ve got biltong drying to lure them in with.”

dic3man: “If you have stable employment and keep bringing up how you’d like to find someone to bring home with you, then maybe you’ll eventually find someone who just wants to leave the country, I’d imagine that as things continue to get worse, your chances will slowly go up.”
