Police are hunting for gunmen who tailed a man driving home and shot him in the head at a residential complex in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on Tuesday.

"The police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in apprehending the suspects or in the investigation to please contact the nearest police station or crime stop on 086 001 0111," said police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo.

He said the 59-year-old victim was entering a complex - his home - when he was followed by suspects driving a blue BMW.

"The suspects then accosted the victim and shot at him using a rifle. The victim died on the scene. The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage but police are investigating," said Masondo.

Author and journalist Mandy Wiener tweeted that the suspects had torched their getaway car after fleeing the scene.

ER24 earlier said the shooting happened at a complex off Anslow Road in Bryanston.

"ER24 paramedics, along with city of Johannesburg and Life Healthcare personnel, arrived on the scene at 12.46pm to find the man lying in the parking area of the complex," said ER24

"Paramedics found the man had a gunshot wound to his head and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead.

"The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities are on the scene for further investigation."
