A police officer has been shot and killed in his driveway at his home in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on Tuesday evening.

National police spokesperson Brig Vishnu Naidoo said Lt Col Fana Simon Maseko was ambushed by two men when he had pulled up to his driveway in Mtsuki Street in Ackerville, Witbank.

Naidoo said the two armed men opened fire at his Mercedes Benz, killing him.

"The suspects fled without taking anything. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage," he said.

National police commission Gen Khehla Sitole has activated the 72 hour activation plan. "I have tasked the provincial team to spare no resources in tracking down those responsible.

"An attack on a police officer is an attack on the nation and as a nation we need to rally together to bring these continuous attacks on our men and women in blue to a grinding halt," Sitole said.

The police ask for people to come forward with any information via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with strictest confidence.
