A 34-year-old man ended up in hospital after eating the Carolina Reaper, which is said to be the world's hottest chili, BBC reported. 

The man who had entered a chili eating contest in New York only ate one Carolina Reaper during the competition, but the damage had already been done. He immediately had a headache, began heaving and developed excruciating neck pain. In the days that followed he described having "crushingly painful" headaches.

As a result of the unrelenting pain, he was admitted to hospital.

The CT scan taken of the man's brain showed the constriction of blood vessels in the brain, CNN reported. Doctors diagnosed the man with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, which is characterised by a painful thunderclap headache.

The man's symptoms subsided gradually and the constricted arteries returned to their normal size. He has been given a clean bill of health.
