A video has emerged showing how a US Border Patrol agent's gender-reveal party sparked a devastating wildfire that caused damage estimated at $8.2 million (R114m).

The blaze started after Dennis Dickey fired a rifle at a target that was supposed to explode and reveal a burst of colour to indicate the gender of his unborn child.

The explosion was caused by Tannerite, which was packed into the target.

The Washington Post reports the fire ultimately spread over 47,000 acres of land, forcing residents to evacuate the area as roughly 800 firefighters fought to get it under control.

The Arizona Daily Star reports  Dickey agreed to pay $220,000 in restitution after he pleaded guilty in court to a misdemeanour charge of causing a fire without a permit.

Footage of the incident was released by the US Forest Service on Monday.
