Veteran ANC MP Ben Turok has been appointed to chair parliament's crucial joint committee on ethics and members' interests following a special meeting of the ANC's parliamentary caucus.

The meeting was convened yesterday by ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga to announce the new party committee whips, MPs who maintain discipline and proper conduct at meetings and in the affairs of parliamentary committees.

The appointments were prompted by the promotion of several committee chairmen as deputy ministers last year.

The ethics and members' committee deals with the declaration of financial and business interests by ministers, deputy ministers and MPs. Turok is also on the ANC's national disciplinary committee.

Young Communist League general secretary Buti Manamela was appointed ANC whip of the labour portfolio committee, Stella Ndabeni for communications, Kwena Moloto for labour and the auditor-general, Andre Gaum for constitutional review and home affairs and Gerhardus Koornhof for ethics and members' interests (also continuing at public enterprises).
