Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik will be released on Wednesday afternoon after he was arrested for allegedly violating his parole conditions, says the Department of Correctional Services.

The department said the man who was allegedly assaulted by Shaik could not be found to help with the investigations.

The Sunday Times reported that Mohammed Ismail was allegedly assaulted by Shaik at a mosque on Friday.

Addressing the media at Westville Prison on Wednesday afternoon, department officials said their attempts to get hold of Ismail failed.

They said they had been told that Ismail did not wish to give evidence or to cooperate with the investigation.
