Parliament rings closing bell as Mbalula ‘clarifies’ spending on Mayweather trip

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation says it is satisfied with the clarification provided by Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula‚ over who footed the bill for boxing champion Floyd Mayweather’s Reawakening the Giant Tour of South Africa in 2014. The promotional tour for the sport of boxing saw Mayweather visit Dube‚ in Soweto.“The committee appreciates the extensive explanation by Minister Fikile Mbalula and the Department of Sport and Recreation on the exact figures for funds that were spent during the Re-awakening of the Giant Initiative and what they were spent on‚” it said in a statement.“The Committee further notes that the member of the Committee that had initially requested the clarification on this matter is still not satisfied with the explanation given. However the Committee considers this matter closed.”The parliamentary committee did not disclose the amounts involved‚ nor elaborate on Mbalula’s report.The Democratic Alliance’s spokesman on sport Solly Malatatsi said in January that despite the minister’s repeated claims that his department did not spend a single cent for the Mayweather tour‚ the DA was in possession of two invoices as well as two corresponding payment certificates in the public domain‚ for a total of R304‚950 paid to a sports media company by the department for an event directly linked to the tour.“Additionally‚ a top representative of (the company) confirmed with the DA categorically that the company was paid close to R500‚000 by the Department of Sports and Recreation for ‘a number of tables‚ branding and advertising’ at a gala dinner held at Emperors Palace during Mayweather’s visit in January 2014‚” Malatsi asserted...
