Activist Goldberg’s ‘A Life for Freedom’ to be set to music

Anti-apartheid activist Denis Goldberg will take to the stage to narrate his life story in a new musical.Goldberg’s story will feature in a new musical piece by South African composer Matthijs van Dijk at the 2016 Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.The festival is presented annually by the music department at Stellenbosch University.Goldberg was involved in shaping the Freedom Charter and was detained under a state of emergency after the Sharpville Massacre in 1960.The university said that Van Dijk's work‚ titled Moments in a Life‚ would focus on moments in Goldberg's life based on his autobiography‚ A Life for Freedom – The Mission to End Racism in South Africa.Festival director Peter Martins said it was an honour to stage a work about the country’s unique history.“Also‚ it is a privilege to have Denis on stage performing as the narrator of his own story‚" he said.The festival runs from July 1 to 10. ..
