The African National Congress (ANC) is giving the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) a run for its money in Nkandla‚ KwaZulu-Natal‚ home to President Jacob Zuma's controversial homestead.

Nkandla is currently under the leadership of the IFP.

At 2.26am on Thursday‚ the ANC was leading with 51.46% which amounts to 1 265 votes‚ with the IFP at 45.97% (1 130) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) on 1.55% (38).

The IFP has vowed to retain all the municipalities under its control as the party struggles to keep its dominance in the province it once ruled.

Nkandla is the country's most famous rural area‚ as this is the place where the president spent millions in taxpayers' money to renovate his private home.

The Constitutional Court has ordered Zuma to pay back the money used for non-security features in the upgrade.

In 2011 the IFP won Nkandla with 46.18% with the ANC getting 41.19% of the vote.
