While Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will snub the Hawks‚ former SA Revenue Service (Sars) officials Ivan Pillay and Johann van Loggerenberg will meet the unit. The pair will be accompanied by advocate George Bizos and retired Constitutional Court judge Johan Kriegler who will be providing them with moral and legal support.A number of civil society groups are also set to accompany the pair when they present themselves at the Hawks offices at 9am on Thursday. Mark Heywood from Section 27‚ in a statement on Wednesday‚ said he and representatives from various civil society and church organisations will be present when the pair appear.“This is a civil society observer delegation to express disquiet about the attack on the minister of finance‚ Sars and other independent institutions of state. Their presence will coincide with the time when the first member of Sars has been asked to present himself to the Hawks.“This is a critical moment in our nation's future. There have been extensive discussions today with many different groups on how to respond‚” Heywood said.Pillay and Van Loggerenberg are appearing for their alleged role in the setting up of an alleged covert unit at Sars. They received a letter from the Hawks on Monday‚ requesting them to present themselves for warning statements - which implies that they are suspects and could later face arrest. – TMG Digital/BDlive
