Gambia‚ who meet South Africa in an African Nations Cup qualifier in Durban on Saturday‚ received a major morale boost when they warmed up for the tie with 1-1 draw away in Uganda in a friendly international on Tuesday. Gambia are expected in South Africa on Wednesday morning after a positive result in Kampala where a defensive howler allowed Swedish-based forward Omar Jagne to equalise just three minutes after coming on in the 70th minute.Uganda’s Cranes had taken the lead through a 61st-minute header from Robert Ssentongo‚ set up by former SuperSport United striker Brian Umony. It was only the second game in more than two years for the Gambia‚ fresh from a 24-month ban from the Confederation of African football for age cheating. They beat Mauritania in a friendly in March and Tuesday’s friendly in Kampala was another warm-up before the start of the Nations Cup qualifiers. It was also a first game for new Swiss coach Raoul Savoy‚ who took over last month‚ and for Modou Secka Barrow of the English premier league club Swansea City and Mustapha Carayol of Middlesbrough.Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango started in the team for Uganda‚ coached by former Orlando Pirates boss Milutin Sredrojevic‚ and had little to do in the match. There was also a starting berth for Geofrey Massa‚ who was recently signed by Bloemfontein Celtic. – The Times..
