Bidvest Wits striker Eleazar Rodgers will set a new landmark if he gets onto the field for Bafana Bafana when they take on Burkina Faso in their opening World Cup-qualifying Group D match in Ouagadougou on Saturday. He will shatter the record for the longest wait for any South African international between caps.Edries Burton holds the record‚ spending what was considered an incredible five years between his first and second cap‚ which came at the age of 33.The former Santos‚ AmaZulu and Cape Town Spurs defender‚ who still hold the record for the most appearances in the Premier Soccer League‚ made his national team debut against Kenya in the Four Nations tournament in September 1996. It was a total of five years‚ seven months and four days before he won his next cap‚ against Ecuador in a friendly international in April 2002 as Jomo Sono was auditioning players for a possible World Cup berth. He never played again for the country.Rodgers has already earned two caps for South Africa‚ the first when Carlos Alberto Parreira was using the Cosafa Castle Cup mini tournament in Swaziland in 2007 to look at young players as he searched for candidates for the 2010 World Cup squad. More than a year later‚ Rodgers got another call-up and a starting line-up berth in a friendly against Malawi in Germiston in September 2008.It will be a record-breaking total of eight years and nine days on Saturday since his last cap if the 31-year-old striker‚ recently moved to Bidvest Wits‚ is given a run-out in Shakes Mashaba’s side at the 4 August Stadium in Ouagadougou. - TMG Digital..
