1997 — Elana Meyer reclaims the world half-marathon record as she clocks 67 min 36 sec in Kyoto, Japan, beating reigning world marathon champion Manuela Machado of Portugal by more than three minutes.
1997 — Lehlohonolo Ledwaba retains his WBU bantamweight title when he outpoints Italy’s Gian Maria Petriccioli over 12 rounds at Nasrec. Ledwaba, also the SA junior-featherweight champion, struggled to make the bantamweight limit and gave up the marginal world title after that bout.
2008 — Hashim Amla makes his ODI debut against Bangladesh at Chittagong. Batting at three, he came in with South Africa on 143/1, chasing 179 runs. Amla scored a single off the first delivery he faced, turning Shakib Al Hasan to short fine leg. Amla also hit his first four off Shakib before ending unbeaten on nine off 19 deliveries. At the other end captain Graeme Smith was 103 not out as the Proteas won by nine wickets.
