1966 — The South African Olympic and National Games Association decide to send delegates to an International Olympic Committee meeting in Rome in April to fight for SA’s inclusion at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. But not everyone was in agreement, with two dissenting votes on the basis that South Africa should not have to apologise for its existence nor “explain our internal policies”. SA had been barred from the Olympics for the first time two years earlier, being prevented from competing at Tokyo 1964 because of its racist apartheid policies.
1993 — South Africa’s cricketers suffer another spectacular collapse against world champions Pakistan in a tri-series ODI in East London. Chasing a rain-reduced 172 in 31 overs, SA are 151/3 when skipper Wasim Akram bowls Jonty Rhodes. SA lost their last seven wickets for just 11 runs as they are bowled out nine runs short of the target with five balls remaining.
2003 — Mhikiza “Showtime” Myekeni retains his marginal IBO junior-flyweight title on points against Wyndel Janiola of the Philippines in Polokwane.
