Five nurses and a civilian appeared in Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on charges of theft relating to leaked examination papers, police said.

The six were granted bail of R2000 each, said police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi.

Police uncovered that a nurse in Pretoria, and a group of women in Mpumalanga, had allegedly been selling the exam papers. They were arrested at the weekend.

"Of those arrested, one nurse has agreed to be a State witness," he said.

Hlathi said that another nurse, who was not arrested, will also be a state witness in the case.

He said that they will assist police to catch "the main ringleader" behind the leaked papers, which caused national nursing exams to be cancelled.
