Last week in "Multimillion lease opens can of worms" we reported on a 2000 probe into alleged irregularities in projects supervised by Barlow Govender.

The report by ama-FAIS, an auditing firm, said Govender and Tim Felix should be charged for issuing cheques worth R762 026 without authority as their conduct was tantamount to theft.

We neglected to seek comment on this from Felix, for which we apologise. He has denied any misconduct.

In a fax to Sunday Times, he said the report referred to an investigation into the Indaleni Combined School building project. Felix was employed as a consultant by Govender, who represented the Public Works Department.

Felix said in the fax: "I categorically deny any misconduct of any nature on my part regarding the issues referred to in the article and further point out that I have carried out my business in a highly professional manner at all times, which I believe can be verified by all my past and present clients, including the client for whom the project was carried out."

He said he hadn't seen, nor been informed, of the contents of the government report, particularly with regard to the allegations of misconduct on his behalf. Nor was he aware of any action being taken against him. Govender said through his lawyer that he [Govender] did sign cheques, but that these were issued within his scope of employment.
