The KwaZulu-Natal government pumped nearly R650,000 into a "post-budget outreach" event in Nquthu - just 13 days before the ANC and IFP would battle it out in a crucial by-election.
The event was hosted on May 11, less than two weeks before the May 24 by-election.
The opposition has accused the provincial government of using state resources in a bid to win the by-election for the ANC.
The total of R649,644 spent by the provincial treasury on the event included:
• R107,500 on food for officials and community members;
• R150,062 on a marquee;
• R190,220 for radio adverts and R17,726 for a print advert;
• R48,000 for taxis; and
• R55,632 on a public address system...
