Apologies for dummies — Rule No 1: If you want your apology to appear sincere, you should apologise quickly and of your own accord. You should not first lose a court case.
Rule No 2: Your apology should be sincere. It should not list the faults you were not accused of in an effort to downplay those you were accused of. Imperial CEO Mark Lamberti, who stepped down from Eskom ’s board yesterday saying “mistakes were made”, has clearly not learnt these life lessons.
But accountant Adila Chowan showed him that his reference to her as “a female, employment equity” candidate injured her dignity. A judge agreed. In his airbrushed apology, Lamberti denied his comments were racist or sexist. We disagree. Suck it up and apologise properly, you Mampara...
