Comedian David Kau's movie Taxi Ride, which premiered on pay channel Mzansi Magic last night, certainly won't win him an Oscar but it is a brilliant depiction of the cultural melting pot that is Johannesburg.

The hour-long low-budget film, shot in Tembisa, on the East Rand, and in Soweto, focuses on the daily lives of commuters at taxi ranks.

It features two stubborn Zulu-speaking taxi drivers, played by Khumba Hlophe and Sifiso Nene, and a determined gay man, played by Obakeng "Souljock" Ntong.

Eda Rose plays the part of an overzealous Italian tourist.

Kuli Roberts portrays a "fallen" celebrity, and Pabi Moganedi plays the part of a pretentious, weave and eyelash-wearing Breyonce.

Tango Ncetezo depicts the ambitious Mrs Choene.

The movie is over the top, but so are the characters who queue daily for taxis to get them to work at ranks nationwide.

In one outlandish exchange, Ncetezo's character asks one of the taxi drivers: "What's the ETA?"

When asked what she meant, she replies: "Estimated time of arrival.

"Do you have enough petrol? Do you have a spare tyre? Do you have insurance?"

"I had fun directing it. I also enjoyed working behind the scenes," said Kau.

A DVD of the movie is expected out before the end of month.

"I would love to make it into a TV series. There is so much material - between the taxi drivers and their passengers, it could be a top series," he said.
