When hundreds of visitors arrived at the KwaKhethomthandayo Palace in Nongoma in March 2021 after Zwelithini died from a Covid-19-related illness, Rasta was also present to pay his respects to the family.
The artist told TshisaLIVE he had given the painting to the royal family as a gift.
Rasta said he had been threatened before his departure for the funeral but his artworks were his way of paying respect to legends.

Rasta celebrates Zulu king with a portrait

Lebani “Rasta” Sirenje has added another iconic portrait to his collection after painting the new Zulu king.
The ceremonial handover of the certificate of recognition to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini by President Cyril Ramaphosa took place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
Misuzulu is the first Zulu king officially recognised and supported by the government since democracy in 1994 and came after the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini and Queen Mantfombi Dlamini in 2021.

The controversial Zimbabwean artist painted the portrait at the FNB Stadium during the Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Soweto derby.
“Bayede King Misizulu coronation, painting at FNB Soweto derby. Painted live at Channel 161 Mzansi Magic Zulu royal coronation,” he captioned the post when sharing images from the event on his timeline.
