South African-born actress Thuso Mbedu has reflected on the year she's had, and one moment she'll never forget is when her The Woman King co-stars sang to her on her birthday.

Taking to her Instagram timeline recently, she shared the special moment which made her shed tears.

“Going through my files to reflect on the year and realising I forgot to share this moment. The plan was to be in New York on this day but it was the only day where all five of us would be available for this iconic photo shoot, and it also happened to be my birthday (in July). Always grateful for these lifetime memories,” she wrote.

In her mentions, her followers were excited Thuso was living her wildest dreams in the US.

“ Did you ever think one day somewhere in your life you would have Viola Davis, the Viola Davis, sing you happy birthday? Like right there next to you ? Yhoooo heeeee,” wrote one follower.

In September Thuso appeared on a digital cover of Essence magazine alongside her co-stars

The historical film centres on an all-female warrior unit which protected the west African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century.

The actress graces the cover alongside Viola, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Adrienne Warren.

The film was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

“My biggest take away is that I really am stronger than I think, believe or allow myself to be, that there is a greatness that you saw that I have not been allowed to see in myself that I need to take in. I thank you for seeing me. Because even now I don’t think I see myself,” Thuso told Essence when speaking about Gina and Viola.

The film also featured John Boyega and South African actors Zozi Tunzi and Siv Ngesi.
