Thuso Mbedu has praised fellow SA-born Hollywood actress Charlize Theron's efforts in helping Southern African youth through her outreach project.

Theron over the weekend celebrated 15 years of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP). The foundation partners with community organisations to advance the health, education and safety of youths living in Southern Africa to help provide them with a better future.

“To witness the massive change that Charlize Theron and the team have done was not only awe-inspiring but it also filled me with so much hope. In those young leaders who have been actively impacted there’s great hope for a better future,” said Mbedu.

“To the youth of South Africa: you matter — more than your circumstances will let you believe. We believe in the power that rests in you and be encouraged as there are people who are fighting for you.

“To the rest: do what you can with what you have and watch it change the world. Use your voice, your resources, your community. There’s nothing 'too little' when it comes to making change for the better.”

Previously, Thuso turned her 30th birthday into an occasion to help others.

The Underground Railroad star asked her fans to direct their love to hand-picked charities instead of showering her with gifts.

“I’ve had a number of friends ask me what I want for my birthday. Honestly and truly, I feel like God has blessed me with everything I need right now and so I’d like to extend that blessing to those who aren’t as fortunate,” said Thuso.

“I’ve identified three charities I’d like you to donate to as a birthday gift to me.”

The star listed CTAOP, Save The Children SA and Door of Hope Children’s Mission as programmes she hoped fans would donate to in honour of her birthday.
