'If you are tired of me, then switch' — Somizi on getting cast on another singing competition
Mzansi had mixed reactions regarding Somizi Mhlongo being cast on The Masked Singer SA, but he couldn't care less.
The media personality was cast as a panellist on the game show, alongside J'Something, Sithelo Shozi and Skhumba.
When speaking at the press conference of The Masked Singer South Africa recently, Somizi said while he knew many might not be happy with him getting the gig because he was on another singing competition, being on this show had a different experience and format.
“The first thing when the news goes out, people are going to say 'Ah Somizi again judging' and we are not judging, I think they'll get a pleasant surprise to understand that this is not a singing competition like any other. We are not judges, we are panellists, we are exactly what the audience is, we are just given the voices. But we are exactly what the audience experience,” he said.
When asked what dimensions of his personality his fans were going to see, Somizi said he was staying true to himself and those who love him for that would tune in to watch.
“I've been myself from day one, and I would never change anything for anything or for anyone, so if you are tired of me, then switch. What makes me to be where I am today is my authenticity. I find it very sad for people to always adjust based on where they are. I am not a chameleon. Somizi has always been this, you'll see Somizi at a different show but he will still be Somizi.”
Anele Mdoda and her partners Paul Buys and Frankie du Toit launched The Masked Singer South Africa in partnership with the SABC and Primedia.
From the costumes to the host, Mpho Popps, and the panel of detectives, Anele and her team have been meticulous and intentional in selecting every element of the show.
“I love people who are content but ambitious, and that's exactly what they are. The reason I got Mpho is because I believe it was time for him to be on a shiny-floored show. The show format says there must be a comedian on the panel and Skhumba for me is the most effortless person on stage. I have quietly watched Sithelo on social media for over four years now and built a girl-crush. This girl is so magnetic, she reminds me of a young me. Somizi has got four decades of choreographing people, and he's not afraid to be his faults. J'Something was my first choice.”
