A fully automated McDonald's store in the US has left DJ Shimza feeling disaster is looming and he's shared his opinion on the potential effects of such an operation making its way to South Africa.

The Texas store has no staff members, with everything from food prep to packaging and delivery handled by robots.

“Sad thing is that McDonald’s will be able to sell its burgers for cheaper because it does not have labour costs. Then everyone leaves the other restaurants for cheaper burgers at McDonald’s. Everyone else will have to go this route because you have to be competitive at price level because of how the world economy is right now. Disaster looming,” he tweeted.

In his mentions, some of his followers welcomed the innovation.

“Whichever way we look at it ... innovation drives shareholder value and thus will always have intended and unintended consequences ... We all need to adjust and find new skills, it’s a reality,” said one.

“A good government will put measures in place to ensure businesses operate to empower the people and economy. You can’t stop technology advancement, but can direct the intensity of how it affects your society,” said another.
