Getting a real slap from actress Dawn Thandeka King and praying every day weren't the only ways Wiseman Mcube pushed the envelope for his portrayal of Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala.

The first thing he did was ask the widow of the late kwaito star, Mpho, to take him to the icon's grave at West Park Cemetery to introduce himself and ask for his blessings, says Wiseman.

“I don't like to say that I play the character of Mandoza because I feel I'm disrespecting him. I had to actually live his life. I'm humbled and grateful to be given the opportunity and to be trusted with such a big role.

“This really means a lot to me because Mandoza was an icon and was a people person,” he tells TshisaLIVE ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of the Nkalakatha: the Life of Mandoza biopic.

The six-part life story that delves into the life of the kwaito music legend is set to debut exclusively on BET Africa on August 16.

“I'm a spiritual person, and what I found about Mandoza when I was doing my research was he used to pray a lot. I allowed everything to flow because I could feel his spirit every time we were shooting. I could just feel something coming in. I did a lot for me to connect with him.”
