Inkatha Freedom Party leader and former safety MEC Nyanga Ngubane died this morning, the party's general secretary Musa Zondi said.

He was 65.

“It is with extreme sadness that the IFP has received the news of the passing away of Inkosi Nyanga James Ngubane at the age of 65 at about 3am this morning,” he said.

He died at St Anne's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where he had been since the middle of last week after he collapsed shortly after the New Year.

Ngubane was a member of Inkatha Freedom Party's national executive committee and a former KwaZulu-Natal MEC for safety and social development.

He was also the IFP's member of parliament in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature at the time of his death.
