Cricket sponsors in the Eastern Cape have expressed concern over fraudster Rayan Moodaley's nomination for the Eastern Province Cricket Board presidency.

A staff member at Eastern Province cricket, who did not want to be named, confirmed that sponsors had contacted the organisation yesterday after The Times's revelation that Moodaley had been nominated and supported by Cricket SA.

"The office has been receiving calls from concerned sponsors following reports that Mr Moodaley is in the running for the seat because of the fraud conviction behind him," said the source.

Eastern Province cricket's main sponsor, Chevrolet, said the Moodaley nomination would have no bearing on its decision to back cricket in the province.

"The constitution of Cricket Eastern Cape office bearers is an internal matter and does not relate to Chevrolet's sponsorship to the Chevrolet Warriors," said General Motors SA's communications officer, Gishma Lagardien.

Cricket SA battled to find sponsors following the bonus scandal involving CEO Gerald Majola.

One-day cricket and Twenty20 are without sponsors following the withdrawal of Standard Bank and MTN. Castle Lager bankrolls the Proteas. Elections take place on October 21.
