A pig and a dog have formed an unlikely security team which guards a car spares shop in Cape Town, it was reported.

Visitors to the Cortina Centre in Brooklyn had to first get past Basil, a pot-bellied pig, and his best friend Pepper the dog.

"It was love at first sight for the two of them," owner Leon du Preez told the Daily Voice.

"They do everything together, they even share their tomatoes and apples."

Du Preez said Basil was not an ordinary pig, and did not sniff around in the dirt or eat unclean food.

Pepper was protective of the pig, keeping other dogs at bay.

The two slept together and ate together every day.

Du Preez said there had been no break-ins since the two had come on duty.
