Controversial businessman Radovan Krejcir will find out on Friday whether or not his third bid for bail will succeed.

Krejcir, who is facing kidnap, assault and attempted murder charges, yesterday told the Palm Ridge Regional Court that he was willing to pay an "enormous" amount to secure bail.

Krejcir was denied bail in December after the court found he could "not be trusted" and might use "trickery" to escape the country. He unsuccessfully tried to appeal this ruling in the Johannesburg High Court in January.

In an affidavit read to the court yesterday, Krejcir said: "[My family and I] will lose everything if we flee South Africa ... and become totally destitute."

Krejcir also denied being in possession of travel documents, adding that he was not a flight risk and he had assets in the country "worth millions".

State prosecutor Louis Mashiane opposed the bail application.

Reading an affidavit by investigating officer Freddy Ramuhala, he said: "Krejcir cannot now cry foul and want to have a second bite at the cherry by bringing new evidence through the back door."

Mashiane disputed that Krejcir had presented new facts that justified his release on bail.
