A man accidentally shot his seven-year-old son at a gun exhibition in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The boy was critically wounded and taken to Carstenhof Hospital, said Constable Matomi Tlamela.

The accident happened at Gallagher Estate on Monday where the gun expo was taking place.

It was alleged that the man went into the toilet with his son, and his gun accidentally went off.

The boy sustained a wound to his chest.

Tlamela said no arrest had been made.

"Police are busy investigating a case of negligent handling of a firearm," she said.
