A baby boy who was 12 days old when he was abducted from Cape Town's Groote Schuur hospital on New Year's Day, has been found, Western Cape police said.

Spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said a 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the crime.

"Investigations led the detectives to Nkanini Informal Settlement, Harare to the residence of the suspect where she and the baby were found," he said in a statement.

"The baby was found unharmed and is in good health."

The woman is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of kidnapping.

"The circumstances leading up to this criminal act are still under investigation."

On Friday, Van Wyk said the mother was sleeping with the baby in a cot next to her bed.

A nurse woke her up at 2.45am asking where her baby was.

The empty cot was then found outside the room in the passage.
