The 87th Academy Awards are over but the big talking points linger on.
- 'Birdman' being the big winner
Most people were surprised that this unhinged satire triumphed over the leviathan biopics ( The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything , American Sniper ) and indie wonder Boyhood.
Still, Oscar voters love a comeback and Michael Keaton's shoot-the-works performance certainly fit the bill. And what could be more Oscar-pleasing than a film about acting and directing?
Presenting the best director award to Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, for Birdman, Penn joked: "Who gave this son of a bitch a green card?"
Iñarritu went on to dedicate his moving speech to "my fellow Mexicans", highlighting Penn's gaucheness.
Iñarritu said: "I just pray that the [latest generation of immigrants to this country] can be treated with the same dignity and respect as the ones who came before and built this incredible immigrant nation."
- Joan Rivers' omission from the 'In Memoriam' reel
Joan Rivers, the comedian and actress who was famed for her cutting commentary on Oscars red carpet arrivals through the years, was left out of the In Memoriam show reel, much to the ire of Twitter users.
- Patricia Arquette's feminist acceptance speech
On winning the best supporting actress award, the Boyhood star launched herself into this battle cry: " It's time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America."
- Lady Gaga can actually sing
Lady Gaga was joined by Julie Andrews on stage to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, and proved that her lungs were as remarkable as her dresses.
