Congress delayed over 'un-ANC' tendencies

The ANC Youth League congress scheduled for this week has been postponed. Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, who is also the co-ordinator of the national conference preparatory committee, said yesterday the ANCYL would have to deal with "un-ANC tendencies first" before a congress could be held.Mthethwa said he would hold a meeting with provincial secretaries of the league today to assess the state of their readiness."There are branches which have not held their general meetings and if we were to go ahead we would be leaving some people out of the conference," Mthethwa said.He said the ANC would oppose the court ruling that resulted in four branches in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, being excluded from the conference."Everybody must be on board," he said.Mthethwa insisted that the conference would be held before the end of the year, ahead of the ANC's national general council.A Limpopo ANCYL member, who wished to remain anonymous, accused the ANC of delaying the congress because it was not happy with the presidential candidates."They want to manufacture a candidate who will contest on their behalf," he said.Another said the intention was to delay the congress until up to the ANC general council...
