Cops observed taking R5,000 bribe from suspect: Hawks

Three police officers and a police reservist who allegedly took R5,000 from a suspect they’d arrested for drugs were reportedly unaware they were being watched by Crime Intelligence members.That’s according to the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal‚ who said the quartet “were released on R500 bail each when they appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court following their arrest for corruption along the Berg Street‚ Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday night”.“Captain Lindiwe Khumalo‚ 47‚ Sergeant Sibusiso Ngubane‚ 42‚ Constable Phelelani Nzimande‚ 31‚ and Reservist Constable Sibusiso Ngcamu (46) allegedly demanded and received R5000 from a suspect whom they had arrested for possession of mandrax tablets and whoonga to the estimated street value of R5000‚” a statement said.“The officers took the money and released the suspects‚ but little did they know that their actions were spotted by the Crime Intelligence members who alerted the Hawks.“During their arrest the officers were found in possession of the cash and drugs inside their official vehicle.”They are due back in court on July 8...
