Strictly Halaal: A beauty range for Muslims

02 June 2016 - 10:36 By SHELLEY SEID

A new range of beauty products will cater to an often neglected niche - observant Muslims. Iba, formulated by two sisters in India and launched three years ago, has grown massively since inception and is available in the UK, Singapore, Dubai, India and, from yesterday, South Africa.Durban-based businessman Pramod Penceliah saw a programme on CNN on sisters Mauli Teli and Grishma Teli and their halaal, vegan, recyclable, and animal cruelty-free cosmetic range and decided it was a no-brainer for South Africa. He now holds the rights to the whole of Africa. The range of 84 products includes fragrances, shampoos, conditioners, hair therapy oils, soaps, talcs, masks, exfoliators, deodorants, face wash, blemish cream, make-up remover and make-up.There is a range of alcohol-free, halaal aerosol deodorant for men, a first in South Africa."All the products are certified halaal by the internationally recognised body Halal India," said COO Vanessa Munusamy at the launch of the range in Durban this week."We are also working with the South African National Halaal Authority to get a local certificate."But she is quick to point out that the products appeal to a far wider market. "They don't contain alcohol or animal ingredients like collagen and elastin, or other harsh chemicals; plus they are not tested on animals and so appeal to those who want things that are pure, natural and healthy."The range will launch in Cape Town in the middle of the month and in Johannesburg at the end of June. The products will initially be available through Spar pharmacies, and later at kiosks in shopping centres. The entire range is available through Iba's online store.www.ibahalalcare.com/..
