Bottle of the week: A triumph of terror

Bottle of the Week: Simonsig Garland 2009 How much and where? R1375; www.simonsig.co.zaWhy? The Book of Proverbs gives us a synonym for garland as "beautiful crown", which sums up this eponymous wine. Given that it's made from single-vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, the king of red cultivars, grown at the top of the Simonsberg, the name is most appropriate. With 2009 the best vintage of the millennium so far, this is the best red I've tasted from the Simonsberg. It is a triumph of terroir. Now Razvan Macici can blend Cabernet from all over the Western Cape to make the totally brilliant Nederburg Winemasters Reserve 2014, which sells for all of R75 a bottle. 'But all his Romanian gypsy magic cannot capture the savoury tomato paste tang of the Simonsberg that explodes from this bottle.A bottle of The Garland will buy you three cases of Winemasters Reserve, but the Garland will outlast us all. It's the kind of wine our grandchildren will treasure.Rating ********** daisy**** lily*** lotus** jasmine* oleander..
