36 prisoners treated for burns‚ smoke inhalation after fire at Leeuwkop prison

At least 36 prisoners were injured‚ some of them seriously‚ during a fire at Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg on Friday.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two prisoners are in a critical condition‚” said Netcare911.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

“Netcare911 paramedics are on scene with various emergency services... treating the prisoners for smoke inhalation and burn wounds‚” said Netcare911.

Prisoners who need additional medical care were transported to various hospitals in Johannesburg.

The incident happened at about 2pm.
