An athlete who was on her way to a fun run at the Kagiso Sports Complex on the West Rand on Friday was confronted by a mob of people who threatened to stone her car as well as the vehicles of several other racers.

Speaking to TimesLIVE‚ journalist Jessica Levitt said she was outraged by what had transpired.

"We were on our way to the race when a group of people blocked both sides of the road whilst we were trying to enter the premises of the complex. These guys had threatened to knock our cars with stones and were intimidating us. We don't know what the motive was but they appeared to be very angry‚" said Levitt.

She managed to escape unharmed.

Levitt was part of a fun run in memory of sportsman Lamla Howard Ntsobi in a bid to raise funds for three schools based in Kagiso to promote the idea of exercise and sport for health.

The late sportsman‚ popularly known as "Bra Howard"‚ was actively involved in sport in his youth while a pupil at the Lengau Primary and Mosupatsela High schools. The fun race was named after him In recognition of his efforts in raising community participation in sporting activities as well as his passion for sports and academic excellence.

The five and ten kilometre races are hosted by Vuza Group in partnership with Mogale City Local Municipality.

Contacted for comment‚ Striders Youth Day Half Marathon Club organisers said they had not received any reports and therefore could not confirm the incident at the time of publication. The Kagiso SAPS communications desk could also not confirm the incident.

Efforts to contact Mogale City MMC for public safety Tjaart Steenkamp by telephone drew a blank‚ with calls going unanswered.
