One of the police officers who investigated the murder of Karabo Mokoena told the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg that she overheard murder accused Sandile Mantsoe tell other officers that he needed power to run his forex trading business.

Constable Mokgaetsi Mahwete said Mantsoe had told her colleagues that he and Karabo were bound together by a spiritual leader.

"He told them that because he and Karabo broke up‚ he had to make a sacrifice so that he and Karabo can be separated‚" she said.

Mahwete is the officer who responded to a call about a burnt body that was found in the north of Johannesburg. She saw Mantsoe in the holding cells at Sandton police station on the night of his arrest.

Mantsoe stands accused of murder‚ assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Mokoena‚ who was 22 years old at the time‚ went missing on April 28. Her charred remains were found in a ditch.
