SA records more than 2,000 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours for second day

For the second straight day, SA recorded more than 2,000 new cases of Covid-19.

According to health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize on Thursday, there are now 710,505 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country — an increase of 2,156 from the day before.

On Wednesday, Mkhize announced that there had been 2,055 new cases in the preceding 24 hours.

US Covid-19 single-day deaths top 1,200 for first time since August

The number of coronavirus deaths reported in the US on Wednesday reached its highest in two months, offering more evidence that the pandemic was gaining fresh momentum across the country as cooler weather sets in.

Covid-19 deaths nationwide had averaged about 700 a day for much of October before rising to 1,237 on Wednesday, according to a Reuters analysis, the most since August 19.

The number of new infections began trending higher five weeks ago, and health experts have warned that a rise in fatalities would follow.

'We were caught napping': deputy president on Covid-19 corruption

Deputy President David Mabuza says the government was caught napping regarding Covid-19 corruption, saying that some of its procurement systems left much to be desired.

“I must agree that as government I'm sure we were caught napping, some of our procurement systems leave much to be desired and that is why the president has called upon all of us to try to revamp our procurement system.

Pumza Poshee Gambula, whose company allegedly defrauded the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape out of R4.8m, was released on bail of R20,000 on Thursday.

Gambula, 49, made a brief appearance in the Mthatha magistrate's court on two charges of fraud.

The Hawks arrested Gambula after a three-month “intensive prosecution-led investigation” into Covid-19 awareness services.

The University of Fort Hare has announced that there are 125 confirmed Covid-19 cases at the Eastern Cape tertiary institution.

According to spokesperson Tandi Mapukata, the East London campus has 27 new cases — including 25 students, a driver and a security guard.

Parties blamed as Covid-19 cases climb in Mangaung

Officials in the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung municipality are worried because of a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in the past week.

It attributed the spike to an increase in social gatherings, at which health and safety protocols are not followed.

“Social gatherings and parties over weekends have increased, with patrons ignoring health measures which can save lives. Scientists in the country have warned that the risk of a second wave still exists and is high, and this is evident in our city,” said municipal spokesperson, Andile Khedama.

Covid testing and tracing campaign launched in Eastern Cape after students test positive

The health department in the Eastern Cape has launched a testing and tracing campaign after 30 Fort Hare University students tested positive for Covid-19.

The students tested positive amid allegations of non-compliance with level 1 regulations where masks were not worn, social distancing was not observed, and sanitising of hands not done at a tavern in Quigney, East London.
