Authorities in Jamaica say a 15-year-old girl is battling for her life in a hospital after allegedly being raped and then repeatedly stabbed by her father.

The Office of the Children's Registry said that the incident is a "stark reminder of the abuse faced by Jamaica's children."

The father was shot to death by police after confronting officers with a cutlass in rural St. Mary parish. Neighbours had alerted authorities and discovered the bleeding girl in bushes behind her grandmother's house Sunday.

Earlier this year, the United Nations' child welfare agency said it was concerned about what it described as "unrelenting violence" against youngsters in Jamaica.

It said 40 children were killed on the island of roughly 2.7 million people last year.
